As a child I wanted to grow up to be a witch. Before you go on with wisecracks about how I achieved my goal, hear me out.
When I was young Bewitched was my favorite show. I just knew that I would somehow discover one day that I had magical powers. I read every chapter book in our elementary school library about witches, including one where the witch slept on the ceiling of the closet. I was completely infatuated with the idea of wearing the pointed hat and striped stockings and riding on a broom. (This was long before I learned about evil witchcraft and creepy Satan worship. It was all good magic and innocent spells in my mind.)
As a teen I wanted the power to snap my fingers and make everyone freeze in place--Samantha Stevens did it, why couldn't I? As an adult I never could get into the show called Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Too silly. I also cannot get into Charmed. Too slutty. Just not as good as Bewitched. I guess I'm a traditionalist. I liked the movie Practical Magic. Stockard Channing and Diane Weist were great as spinster witch sisters, Sandra Bullock made such a pretty witch. And I do LOVE Harry Potter and try to live his adventures vicariously through the book.
And the clincher: I have a penchant for striped socks--almost every pair I own is striped. Perhaps that is why I like Halloween so much. It's the celebration of witches.
