Poetry

I had caffeine too late in the day, so I'm awake cleaning out files on my computer.

In some old files I came across a poem I wrote when Sam was still a baby. It came to me after listening to a song by Dan Fogelberg called "Forefathers." I remember listening to the song over and over and I started thinking about the stories I had heard about my ancestors.

Just thought I'd share....

LINEAGE
by Michelle Spek Knight

My great-grandfather was a fisherman who looked to the sea for his life.
The turmoil and uncertainty of the sea created
a determination within him, so that even when his young wife died,
leaving a baby with golden locks, he would go on as before, but
stronger.

The son grew and within him also grew a determination, so when his
war-torn country gave him desolation and cold,
seeing his hungry baby with golden locks,
his will would not let him be defeated, and he grew
stronger.

The son grew and he gained from his father a determination,
and when the land of promise challenged him,
and life tested him, taking his baby with golden locks,
he refused to let his spirit be broken, and his spirit was
stronger.

Now I look at my son and wonder what lies ahead for him,
and I pray that the determination of my forefathers
is in the blood of my baby with golden locks,
so that his turmoil, challenges and tests can make him
stronger.
