Yelling

Last week at work we had a purse snatching in front of the restuaurant next door (we are in a strip mall) and my boss ran after the grabber. Another guy in a truck saw the whole thing and followed the grabber around to the back of the stores. Before he took off into some apartments, the truck guy jumped out of his truck and yelled for the grabber to drop the purse right now--and he did. Nothing was missing from the purse, and all because a bystander took initiative and yelled.
The day before, I was speeding from my neighborhood to the freeway when someone honked loudly at me. When I got to the stoplight, a truck pulled up next to me with an angry old man in it. I looked over and he was yelling at me. So I rolled down my window. He rolled his down and started to yell at me for speeding, asking me if I knew it was a 30 mph zone, and told me I must have been going at least 40. I apologized. He yelled that I needed to slow down. I said I would. Then we rolled up our windows and I went our way.
And my mother told me yelling wouldn't get me anywhere. Apparently it works for other people.
