My 2 Reason Policy

I just walked in the door from a garage sale we had for my grandparents. It was unbelievable how much junk they had, and how many people wanted to pay for their junk. It made me want to purge my home of so many things.
While there I had a chat with my cousin Connie about my 2 reason policy. My sister Rachel once stated in her blog that she had a sister who won't have something in her house unless it serves two purposes. My cousin wondered if I was that sister and I admitted that yes, I am. If something is going to be part of my everyday life, sit where I have to look at it and maybe dust it, or take up space in my kitchen drawer, it needs to have at least two reasons to be there. I'll admit I've become a tad bit lenient on the rule, but not very. I've included "Because it makes me happy" as a valid reason, but only barely.
So is my home a veritable jail cell of minimalism and nothingness? No.
I have pictures of my children on the walls (1. They make me happy 2. They help me identify who to feed and send to bed on time.)
And I have plants (1. Oxygen production 2. I'm overwintering outdoor plants so they'll be ready in the spring.)
A few candles (1. Emergency light source 2. Smelly enough to mask little boy stink and garlic.)
Bookshelves full of books (1. Education 2. Entertainment)
I'll admit we have a few things that have 2 reasons, but not good ones. Mostly they have to do with my children:
Game Cube (1. Entertainment 2. Leverage)
Snake (1. To teach responsibility of a pet 2. Educational/Entertaining when we feed her once a week.)
But to be fair, the 2 reason policy is mine, not theirs, so if my sons want to keep odd things, it's up to them.
If you come to my house and see something that suprises you, go ahead and ask. If I can't justify it, you can take it home with you.

I'm pretty utilitarian, too -- I don't do "doo-dads" very well. I like a more spare look and I think I breathe easier, literally and figuratively, with less stuff around. I think pretty long and hard about putting something on display and nothing makes me happier than filling a box of unused items to give away or sell.

I really enjoyed spending time with you on Saturday. Thanks for clearing up your 2 reason policy- sounds like a good one that I should use.
